Retail Therapy in Seoul: My Top 3 Must-Visit Shopping Malls!
Hey everyone, Alex here!
You know I love exploring all facets of Seoul, from its historical grandeur to its vibrant street food. But let's be honest, sometimes, a little retail therapy is exactly what you need! Seoul is a true paradise for shoppers, offering everything from trendy streetwear to luxury brands, all housed in some truly impressive retail spaces.
As a student living here, I've discovered that Seoul's shopping malls are more than just places to buy things; they're entertainment hubs, cultural spaces, and even architectural marvels. Today, I'm excited to share my personal top three favorite shopping malls in Seoul. Get your wallets ready – you're in for a treat!
1. The Hyundai Seoul (더현대 서울): A Futuristic Oasis of Retail!

If you're looking for a shopping experience that feels like stepping into the future, The Hyundai Seoul is an absolute must-visit. Opened in 2021, this mall in Yeouido quickly became a landmark, redefining what a shopping space can be.
- Why I love it: It's not just a mall; it's an experience. The Hyundai Seoul dedicates almost half of its space to recreational areas, including an incredible indoor garden called "Sounds Forest" with real trees and natural light pouring in from a glass roof. There's also a stunning 12-meter waterfall! It feels incredibly spacious and airy, a stark contrast to typical crowded malls. You'll find a fantastic mix of trendy local brands, popular international labels, and an amazing food hall called "Tasty Seoul" with a huge variety of delicious options.
- Best for: Trendsetters, architecture enthusiasts, families, and anyone looking for a relaxed, aesthetically pleasing shopping experience. Great for a day out even if you're not planning to buy much.
- Alex's Tip: Take your time to explore the different levels and discover the various art installations and unique pop-up stores that are constantly changing. The food hall in the basement is a culinary adventure in itself – try some of the specialized Korean street food vendors or grab a coffee at one of the stylish cafes. It's truly a place where shopping meets art and nature.
- How to get there: Take a subway to Yeouido Station (Line 5 or 9), Exit 3. It's connected via an underground walkway.
2. Starfield COEX Mall (스타필드 코엑스몰): The Entertainment & Shopping Hub!

Starfield COEX Mall isn't just a shopping mall; it's a massive underground city of entertainment, culture, and retail right in the heart of Gangnam. It's one of Asia's largest underground malls, and you could easily spend a whole day (or two!) here.
- Why I love it: It has everything! Beyond hundreds of shops ranging from fashion to electronics, it's home to some iconic attractions. The Starfield Library (별마당 도서관) is a breathtaking, Instagram-famous space with towering bookshelves that's just mesmerizing. There's also the COEX Aquarium for marine life lovers, a large cinema (Megabox), and various exhibition halls. The food options are endless, from casual eateries to upscale restaurants. It’s a place where you can shop, eat, learn, and be entertained all under one roof.
- Best for: Families, K-Pop fans (near SM Town Coex Artium, though that specific building recently closed, the area is still K-pop central!), book lovers, moviegoers, and anyone who wants a comprehensive shopping and entertainment experience.
- Alex's Tip: Start your visit by spending some time at the Starfield Library – it’s a truly unique and beautiful space. If you're a fan of K-Pop, the surrounding Gangnam area and the former SM Town Artium location still hold a lot of K-culture significance. Also, if you’re looking for a specific type of shop, check the mall directory – it’s huge!
- How to get there: Directly connected to Samseong Station (Line 2) and Bongeunsa Station (Line 9).
3. Lotte World Mall (롯데월드몰): Luxury, Lifestyle, and Sky-High Views!

Connected to the iconic Lotte World Tower, Lotte World Mall in Jamsil is a truly massive and impressive complex that combines high-end shopping with a wide range of lifestyle and entertainment options.
- Why I love it: This mall is enormous and offers a luxurious shopping experience with major department stores like Lotte Avenuel (Korea's largest luxury department store) and a wide array of international and domestic brands. Beyond shopping, it's a full-fledged destination. You can visit the Seoul Sky Observatory in Lotte World Tower for breathtaking views, explore the Lotte World Aquarium, catch a movie at the cinema, or even go ice skating at the Lotte World Ice Rink. There are countless dining options, from fine dining to casual food courts. It really offers a complete day out.
- Best for: Luxury shoppers, families (especially when combined with Lotte World Theme Park), those looking for stunning city views, and anyone who wants a convenient one-stop destination for shopping and entertainment.
- Alex's Tip: If you're visiting Lotte World Theme Park, the mall is a perfect extension of your day. Make sure to check out the Seoul Sky Observatory in the Lotte World Tower for incredible panoramic views of Seoul, especially around sunset. The basement level also has a fantastic Lotte Mart for picking up Korean snacks and groceries!
- How to get there: Directly connected to Jamsil Station (Line 2 or 8).
Seoul's shopping malls are more than just places to spend money; they're vibrant hubs where fashion, food, entertainment, and culture converge. Whether you're looking for the latest trends, unique gifts, or just a fun way to spend an afternoon, these malls have something spectacular to offer.
