Want to experience royal Korea? Alex, your K-culture loving grad student, guides you through Gyeongbokgung Palace – Seoul's grandest and most beautiful Joseon-era landmark!
Step into History: Exploring Gyeongbokgung Palace, Seoul's Majestic Heart!

Hey everyone, Alex here!
You know I'm always fascinated by how Seoul perfectly blends its cutting-edge modern vibe with a profound, rich history. And if there's one place that truly embodies this historical grandeur and the elegant soul of Korea, it's Gyeongbokgung Palace (경복궁). Every time I visit, I'm just completely captivated by its scale, its beauty, and the stories hidden within its walls.
As a student living here, I've had the chance to explore many historical sites, but Gyeongbokgung always stands out. It's not just a collection of old buildings; it's a living piece of Korea's past. Today, I want to take you on a journey through this magnificent palace, sharing what makes it such an unmissable part of your Seoul adventure!
Gyeongbokgung Palace: The Grandeur of a Dynasty
Gyeongbokgung Palace is the largest and arguably the most beautiful of the Five Grand Palaces built during the Joseon Dynasty. Constructed in 1395, it was the primary royal palace, serving as the heart of the Joseon kingdom for centuries. Its name, "Gyeongbokgung," means "Palace of Shining Happiness," and once you step inside, you'll understand why!
- Why I love it: It’s truly a sprawling complex of majestic gates, grand courtyards, serene pavilions, and beautifully manicured gardens. When you stand in front of Geunjeongjeon (근정전), the main throne hall, you can almost feel the weight of history and imagine kings holding court. The architectural details, the vibrant dancheong (traditional decorative coloring), and the sheer space make it incredibly impressive. You can easily spend hours getting lost (in a good way!) exploring every corner, from the vast assembly grounds to the tranquil lakeside pavilions like Hyangwonjeong (향원정).
- Best for: Everyone! This is an essential Seoul experience for history enthusiasts, architecture admirers, photographers, and anyone looking for a powerful connection to Korea's royal past.
- Alex's Tip: Don't miss the Royal Guard Changing Ceremony at Gwanghwamun Gate (광화문), the main entrance. It's a colorful and synchronized spectacle that happens a few times a day (usually at 10 AM and 2 PM, but always check the official schedule online before you go!). This performance truly brings the palace to life and is fantastic for photos.
My Favorite Spots & Must-Do Experiences Inside the Palace:
- Gwanghwamun Gate (광화문): This is where your journey usually begins. It's the impressive main gate. Take a moment to admire its scale and intricate design.

- Geunjeongjeon (근정전): The Throne Hall. This is the heart of the palace, where the king conducted official business and received foreign envoys. The sheer size and the beautiful stone carvings in the courtyard are breathtaking.

- Gyeonghoeru Pavilion (경회루): My personal favorite for photos! This grand pavilion sits on an artificial pond and was used for important state banquets and royal receptions. It’s absolutely stunning, especially on a clear day with the surrounding mountains as a backdrop. It's particularly beautiful reflected in the water.

- Hyangwonjeong Pavilion (향원정): A smaller, more intimate pavilion set on a tranquil island in a lotus pond. It's a picturesque spot perfect for quiet reflection and admiring traditional Korean garden design. It feels very peaceful here.

- National Palace Museum of Korea & National Folk Museum of Korea: These two excellent museums are located within the palace grounds (or directly adjacent) and offer even deeper insights into royal life and Korean folk culture. They're definitely worth a visit if you have extra time!
Alex's Ultimate Tip: Rent a Hanbok!
This is probably the best way to enhance your Gyeongbokgung experience! If you visit the palace wearing a hanbok (한복 - traditional Korean attire), entry to the palace is FREE! Plus, it's incredibly fun and makes for the most memorable photos. There are many hanbok rental shops right around the palace, and they'll help you pick out a beautiful outfit and get dressed. You'll see so many people doing it, it really adds to the atmosphere. Trust me, it’s a blast and makes you feel truly transported back in time!
Gyeongbokgung Palace is more than just a historical site; it’s a powerful connection to Korea’s soul. It’s a place where you can wander through centuries of history, appreciate stunning architecture, and capture truly unforgettable moments.
